Biggest Mobile websites
Mobile services and sites are predicted to be a strong online growth area in South Africa. Here are the movers and shakers in the mobile website space.
Internet enabled mobile devices like smartphones and mobile media players are becoming increasingly popular in South Africa, especially with Vodacom and MTN launching technologies to support ever increasing mobile broadband speeds.
According to World Wide Worx MD Arthur Goldstuck 450 000 Internet users in South Africa use their cellphone as a primary form of access, while 3-million consumers use it in addition to other forms of access like ADSL.
Goldstuck says that the growth in cellphone based Internet access will fuel the overall Internet access growth in South Africa, predicting that the total online population in South Africa will grow to 9.9-million by 2014.
This growth is clearly visible in the latest Online Publishers’ Association (OPA) and Nielsen Online’s April 2010 mobile website statistics which showed that over 2-million unique browsers visited OPA registered mobi sites.
